Session Time Tools: Alerts, Cooling-Off and Self-Exclusion
Casino time-control tools — session reminders, cooling-off periods, deposit limits and self-exclusion — work differently from each other. This guide explains what each does and where to find them.
Why time tracking matters during play
Time spent in a session is not consistently felt while play is active. Engaging tasks tend to compress the perceived passage of time, which means a session that felt brief can be considerably longer when measured by the clock. A short check of elapsed time — enabled by a device clock, a browser tab with a timer or an operator's built-in reminder — helps compare actual and intended duration.
This article describes categories of responsible gambling tools that regulators discuss and operators may offer. It is not a directory of specific features at any one casino. Availability, configuration and scope vary by operator and jurisdiction. Check your account settings for what is currently available.
Session reminders and alert settings
A session reminder is an on-screen notification that appears after a set period — for example, after 30 or 60 minutes of continuous play. It typically shows elapsed time, sometimes the net session result, and asks whether to continue or stop. The reminder pauses the session briefly; it does not end it automatically.
If the feature is available, setting a reminder at an interval shorter than a typical session can help maintain awareness. A reminder does not enforce a limit; it provides a moment to review before continuing. Some platforms also offer a reality check that shows aggregate wins and losses in the current session, separate from the balance display.
Cooling-off periods
A cooling-off period suspends account access for a defined short duration — commonly 24 hours, 48 hours or 7 days. During the period the account cannot be used to gamble. A cooling-off period typically expires automatically at the end of the chosen term, after which the account is restored without further action by the player.
A cooling-off period is useful for a short break when you want to step away without committing to a longer suspension. It is not a substitute for self-exclusion in situations where a longer break is needed. The period cannot usually be shortened once set.
Deposit and loss limits as time-based boundaries
A deposit limit caps how much can be deposited in a defined rolling window — daily, weekly or monthly. A loss limit caps net losses over the same type of period. Both restrict activity indirectly by controlling the funds available for play rather than the time spent on the platform.
When a deposit or loss limit is set, it typically takes effect immediately. Requests to increase a limit usually require a waiting period before the increase becomes active — this delay is a deliberate safeguard. Reducing a limit generally takes effect sooner. Keep this asymmetry in mind: an increase set in an impulsive moment may not apply immediately, but a reduction set in a considered moment often does.
Self-exclusion and multi-operator schemes
Self-exclusion blocks account access for a longer minimum period — often six months to five years — and typically cannot be reversed before the minimum term ends. An operator-level self-exclusion applies to that operator's platforms only. Multi-operator schemes, available in some jurisdictions, allow a single self-exclusion to cover many participating operators simultaneously.
In Great Britain, GamStop is a national scheme that enables self-exclusion across many licensed operators simultaneously. The Gambling Commission's guidance on gambling tools and GamCare's resources describe the process. These apply to operators licensed in Great Britain; availability and schemes differ by country. If you are concerned about your gambling, using a multi-operator scheme rather than single-operator exclusion reduces the chance of moving to another platform after a period of restriction.
Where to find these tools and how they are activated
Responsible gambling tools are usually found in account settings under a section labelled "responsible gaming", "safer gambling" or similar. Some are also reachable from the main menu or the cashier. If you cannot find a specific tool, contact support and ask where to set it — operators licensed in regulated jurisdictions are required to offer certain protections.
Setting a limit or exclusion in writing (via live chat or email) creates a record. If a tool you have requested is not activated promptly, escalate via the operator's complaint procedure or contact the relevant regulator. Setting and regularly reviewing limits is listed in official responsible gambling guidance as one of the practical steps players can take. 18+.
